ABOUT THE MASTITIS CALCULATOR

In 2004/2005 Dairy InSight commissioned a major study by the National Mastitis Advisory Committee to determine the costs of mastitis for the average dairy farm in New Zealand. This calculator is based on the results of that study. View the Report.

Mastitis occurs in many forms and no two farms have the same problems. The mastitis experts have used all of the published data and their collective experience to assign costs and savings.

Costs include:
· decreased production from infected cows,
· labour for treating cows and handling hospital mobs,
· antibiotics,
· discarded milk,
· lost days in milk through drying cows off early,
· the cost of replacements,
· the cost of milk quality insurance,
· 2 vet visits,
· and dry cow consultation costs.

Note that no value is assigned to antibiotic contaminated milk that is fed to calves, since it would need to be replaced with milk that could be sold if it was not available.
